Children's & Youth Theatre
Together, 600 amazing children
and young people create amazing
work in amazing workshops.
The Chickenshed method changes
minds, lives, theatre…
At Chickenshed, we believe
in the power of theatre. We believe
in the power of everyone.
This company belongs to everyone. As well as our theatre company, Chickenshed is home to the thousands of young people (and some not so young) who visit daily, weekly and yearly. They come to take part in our workshops, perform in our productions, and form our membership.
Children’s Theatre workshops involve development through play, observation and participation. The Youth Theatre members experience other aspects of the Theatre’s work by supporting children in the younger groups, learning about theatre production and enhancing specific performing arts skills.
We run a cross-age vocal group, featuring up to 120 children and young people from our theatre workshops, who perform a repertoire of original material and arrangements.
As well as weekly workshops to develop their inclusive performance skills, our Children's and Youth Theatre members take part in the artistic programme of the company, performing in our annual Christmas Show. Once they become a member, children move through the membership groups and many stay involved with Chickenshed throughout their lives.
In theory, anyone can join: Children’s Theatre from 5, Youth Theatre from 13. In practice, the waiting list of hopefuls regularly tops 2,000 names. To expand, we need more space, more resource, more funds. However, a small number of places do become available in our Children’s and Youth Theatre each year.
